Mobilizing support for women’s rights, increasing their political profile and changing societal perceptions of the role of women has remained a central part of HRH Princess Basma’s activities over the past several decades.

She is keenly involved in local and international processes that aim to advance the status of women whilst continuously bringing to the public’s attention that women are indispensable partners in the socio-economic development process in the Kingdom. From its earliest days, the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development, JOHUD chaired by HRH Princess Basma, worked closely with local women who subsequently emerged as local leaders, assuming managerial positions in JOHUD itself and with local municipalities. Princess Basma’s role as an advocate for women’s rights is well recognized in Jordan and the Arab region.

At the local level she is Chairperson of the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW), President of the Jordanian National Forum for Women (JNFW), and Honorary President of the General Federation of Jordanian Women (GFJW). As Chairperson of the JNCW she has been involved in guiding efforts to amend a number of laws and legislations concerning women as well as the development of programmes and activities that are increasing the profile of women in national and local decision-making bodies.

As Honorary Patron to the Arab Women Media Centre Princess Basma is closely involved in the annual event that marks Arab Media Women Day, honouring women in various local media establishments and highlighting their role and achievements in the sector.

On the international level she is a Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). She has also been invited to become one of the first Awareness Ambassadors for The World Young Women′s Christian Association (YWCA).
