AMMAN - The local medical sector has become a source of pride for all Jordanians, and the quality of its services continues to attract patients from all over the region to receive treatment in the Kingdom, HRH Princess Basma said.

It is one of the sectors that form the image of our Jordanian people reflecting their determination, spirit of giving and deep love for their country, she said on Monday at the opening ceremony of the 11th International Jordanian Conference of Internal Medicine.

Organised by the Jordanian Society of Internal Medicine in cooperation with the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE), the three-day conference brings together some 600 local and international doctors to discuss the latest developments in internal medicine.

On the conference agenda are recent medical advances in several fields including nephrology, gastroenterology and neurology.

Speakers at Monday opening ceremony all commended Jordanian physicians, stressing the need for them to continuously develop their skills and keep abreast of the latest methods and technologies in medicine.

Nayef Abdallat, president of the internal medicine society, said Jordanian doctors should constantly improve themselves, noting that the conference, which concludes on Thursday, will give them the chance to network with international experts and exchange expertise.

Health Minister Abdul Latif Wreikat highlighted the development of internal medicine in the Kingdom.

Internal medicine in Jordan started in the 1950s, with only one specialised doctor he said, noting that that every hospital and healthcare centre in the Kingdom now has an internal medicine department.

Also during the ceremony, RCPE representative Deepak Dwarakanath presented an honorary fellowship to Princess Basma in recognition of her support for Jordans medical sector and her active advocacy role locally and internationally in health, education and the advancement of women.

The Princess said she was honoured to receive the fellowship, adding that she was proud of her involvement in supporting medicine in the Kingdom.

The UK-based RCPE is a professional organisation that develops and oversees an ongoing programme of medical examinations, education and training for qualified doctors who wish to undertake postgraduate education to pursue a career in internal medicine, according to its website.

The college and the Jordanian Society of Internal Medicine have a common set of values: ensuring excellence in education, training and standard setting Dwarakanath said at the ceremony.

Princess Basma also inaugurated an exhibition of pharmaceutical and medical products organised on the sidelines of the conference.
